Nicaragua opens inquiry into ChevronTexaco for gasoline spill
MANAGUA (AFP) Oct 08, 2003
The government said Wednesday it was investigating US-based ChevronTexaco for a gasoline spill in May at one of its service stations that created health safety hazards.

Nicaragua's Environment and Natural Resources Ministry said a leak due to faulty pipes released some 21,000 liters (5,600 gallons) of gasoline, affecting underground water supplies.

"This exposed people to a possible danger or explosion and to a contamination of underground water," said Environment Minister Arturo Harding.

The probe could result in administrative penalties or the filing of a lawsuit.
