There were no reports of either casualties or damage from the region.
A seismological laboratory in Patras, where the tremor was clearly felt, said it occurred at 4:33 am (0233 GMT) and had its epicentre deep under the seabed in the Gulf of Patras, 171 kilometres (106 miles) west of the Greek capital Athens.
There have been several tremors in the region in recent months. On September 9 a quake measuring 4.2 points on the Richter scale shook the region, but also caused no damage.
