Quake jolts Taiwan, no casualties reported

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Taiwan Friday, seismologists said.

There were no reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor hit at 4:41 pm (0841 GMT) with an epicenter 10 kilometersmiles) east of Tapu in central Chiayi County, the Seismology Center said.

The tremor originated 5.1 kilometers below sea level, it said.

Taiwan, lying near the junction of two tectonic plates, is prone to earthquakes.
