A quake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit the remote Kikai Island in Kagoshima, southwestern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The focus of the quake, which occurred at 2:25 am (1725 GMT), was located 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) below the seabed in the Pacific, the agency said.
Another quake measuring 5.0 struck southern part of Hokkaido island, northern Japan, at 7:39 am, the agency said.
No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
