Quake jolts northern Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted northern Japan early Saturday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at 3:44 am (1844 GMT), with its focus located 40 kilometers (25 miles) below sea-level near Ibaraki, some 100 kilometersmiles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
