At least three dead in new Vietnam floods
HANOI (AFP) Nov 27, 2003
At least three people have died in floods in central Vietnam, less than a fortnight after torrential rains left more than 60 people dead, officials said Thursday.

A flash flood in Quang Nam province on Monday swept away a truck carrying five people as it crossed a bridge.

Three passengers were rescued but locals were unable to save two others, said an official from the provincial flood and storm control committee. Only one corpse has been found.

The following day a boat carrying three people capsized in the flooded village of Tay An. The boatman and a 12-year-old boy were swept to their deaths by the fast-flowing floodwaters. Their bodies were found on Wednesday.

Another child passenger survived by clinging to a tree, the official said.

Meanwhile, a Vietnamese cargo ship bound for China capsized and sank Tuesday in rough seas off the coast of Danang, just north of Quang Nam. Its 13 crew members were rescued by the coastguard.

Torrential rains earlier this month in nine central provinces led to massive floods and landslides, washing away entire villages, crops and fragile infrastructure. At least 64 people died.

In October, 44 people died in the same area in floods, causing nearly 24 million dollars worth of damages.
