Earthquake jolts northern Japan

An earthquake registering 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Japan's eastern Hokkaido island Wednesday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, according to Kyodo news.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the quake, which occurred at 11:11 pm (1411 GMT), Kyodo reported.

The focus of the quake was 50 kilometers (31 miles) under the ocean off the Kushiro region, Kyodo reported the agency as saying.
