Two dead in southern Thailand floods

Two people died in flash floods affecting six of Thailand's southern provinces this week, the interior ministry said Thursday.

One person in Songkhla province's Hat Yai district and another in Pattalung town in the province of the same name died in the floods which hit southern Thailand Tuesday, the department of disaster prevention said in a statement.

Narathiwat, Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Yala and Pattani provinces were also affected but the waters have now stabilised, it said.

"There is still some light rain in those provinces but the water levels are now either decreasing or stabilising," it said, adding that the cost of the damage was being calculated.

In October three people were killed and some 200,000 people evacuated in Thailand's upper southern and central provinces during major flooding estimated to have caused at least one billion baht (25 million dollars) of damage.

Flooding in the south has worsened in recent decades in the wake of rampant deforestation. A moratorium has been in place against logging in Thailand since 1988.
