3.1 magnitude earthquake hits San Francisco Bay area

 An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale shook the San Francisco Bay area Wednesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake, whose epicenter was about one kilometer (0.6 mile) east of the city of Oakland, across the bay from San Francisco. shook buildings in Oakland violently.

The temblor struck at about 4:22pm (0022 GMT) according to the USGS.
