Moderate quake shakes northern Japan, no damage reported

An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan Friday, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at 12:49 pm (0349 GMT), with its focus 20 kilometersmiles) below sea-level in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) off Niigata, some 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

There is no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
