Quake shakes northern Japanese island, no damage reported

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido on Monday, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at 5:47 pm (0847 GMT), with its focus 30 kilometersmiles) below sea-level in the Pacific Ocean off Kushiro, eastern Hokkaido, some 850 kilometers (527 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

There is no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
