6.4 magnitude earthquake hits southern California

 An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale shook central and southern California on Monday, the US Geographical Survey said.

CNN television said the temblor, which could be felt as far south as Los Angeles, measured 6.5 on the scale.

The US Geographical Survey said the quake struck at 11:15 amabout 11 kilometers (seven miles) northeast of San Simeon, which lies on the coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
