TEHRAN (AFP) Dec 26, 2003 A massive earthquake in the southeastern Iranian fort city of Bam killed 5,000 to 6,000 people Friday, the provincial governor of Kerman province, Mohammad Ali Karimi, was quoted by the state news agency IRNA as saying.
The agency said Karimi had given that figure to President Mohammad Khatami during a television conversation with him.
State television had earlier said 4,000 people had died and that another 30,000 were injured.
