TEHRAN (AFP) Dec 28, 2003
Some 11,500 injured victims of the devastating Bam earthquake have been flown to hospitals around the country for treatment, a health ministry spokesman said Sunday.

"In all, 11,500 injured were evacuated, 6,300 are in hospital and the others were treated for minor injuries," Houchmand Sefidi, an adviser to the minister, was quoted by the official news agency IRNA as saying.

He added that the authorities had earmarked 10,000 beds in hospitals nationwide for the treatment of the injured.

The official death toll in Friday's quake stands at 20,000, but is expected to rise further.
