Bam quake cost 22,000 lives: governor's office

The earthquake which struck the Bam region of southeast Iran cost 22,000 lives, according to the latest provisional death toll, the provincial governor's office announced Sunday.

"At a meeting of governorate officials, rescue work officials said the provisional toll for the quake was 22,000 dead," up from a previous official toll of 20,000, said Asghar Vossough, spokesman for the Kerman governorate.
