Egypt spy chief, information minister in lightning visit to Saudi
RIYADH (AFP) Jan 17, 2004
Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman and Information Minister Safwat al-Sherif made a brief visit to Riyadh Saturday, Egyptian diplomats said.

The pair met the kingdom's de facto ruler Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz and delivered a message from President Hosni Mubarak, the diplomats said without disclosing its contents.

Suleiman has been a key player in Egypt's attempts to broker a revival of the Middle East peace process, holding regular talks with Palestinian militant groups in a bid to negotiate a renewed truce in anti-Israeli attacks.

In 1979, Egypt became the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel.
