Strong quake jolts northern Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan Friday, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake occurred at 6:01 pm (0901 GMT), with its focus 70 kilometersmiles) below sea-level just off the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture, roughly 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
