Moderate earthquake jolts northern Japan

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan Monday, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake occurred at 5:45 pm (0845 GMT), with its focus 70 kilometersmiles) below sea-level just off the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture, roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
