TOKYO (AFP) Jan 26, 2004
Two earthquakes measuring 4.6 and 4.1 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan Monday evening, the meteorological agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The first quake occurred at 5:45 pm (0845 GMT), with its focus 70 kilometers (45 miles) below sea-level just off the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture, roughly 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Tokyo, the agency said.

It was followed by the second quake at 9:40 pm (1240 GMT), which also had its focus 70 kilometers (45 miles) below sea-level off the Pacific coast of Miyagi, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves due to the quakes, the agency said.
