Quake jolts southern Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck southern Japan Tuesday, the meteorological agency said.

There was no immediate report of damage or injuries.

The quake occurred at 1:20 pm (0420 GMT), with its focus 60 kilometers (37.2 miles) below sea-level off the coast of Hachijo-island, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of Tokyo, the agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami tidal waves, it said.
