Quake jolts southern Iran

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the open-ended Richter scale shook an area in Iran's southern province of Hormozgan on Wednesday, the state news agency IRNA said.

The quake struck near the town of Minab at 12:36 pm (0906 GMT). There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

On December 26, the ancient town of Bam in southeast Iran was devastated by a huge quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale that killed more than 40,000 people.
