PARIS (AFP) Feb 06, 2004 An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit the northwest of Indonesia's Irian Jaya province late Thursday, France's earth sciences observatory in Strasbourg reported.
The epicentre of the quake was given as 3.19 degrees south and 136.2 degrees east.
It was the largest quake measured in the region since 2000, according to the Strasbourg observatory.
