Botswana president starts Lesotho visit, AIDS on agenda
MASERU (AFP) Apr 14, 2004
Botswana President Festus Mogae arrived Wednesday in the tiny southern African kingdom of Lesotho on a three-day visit during which AIDS -- a major problem for his country -- will figure on the agenda.

Mogae, a guest of King Letsie III, is due to address the Lesotho parliament later Wednesday. A day later, he will meet the king formally and address a public rally.

On Friday, Mogae is to meet with HIV/AIDS support groups and people living with the disease.

Almost a third of Lesotho's population of just under one million are infected with HIV, according to UN figures.

But Botswana's HIV infection rate is the world's highest, at nearly 40 percent of adults infected with the disease among a population of 1.5 million.

About 110,000 people are thought to be in dire need of anti-retroviral therapy in Botswana. AIDS-related ailments account for about 60 percent of hospital treatment.
