Storm-devastated area in Dominican Republic now hit by earthquake
SANTO DOMINGO (AFP) May 29, 2004
After flash flooding claimed 388 lives nationwide, the Dominican town of Jimani was hit Saturday by an earthquake, apparently with no further injuries, the National Emergency Center said.

"There are no tall buildings in Jimani that can be damaged, so we are not worried about that, but the fact that it is coming under the current circumstances sows panic among the homeless and rescue workers," said the center's spokesman, Radhames Lora Salcedo.

The temblor, measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, hit at 1344 GMT Saturday as humanitarian aid continued to stream in from abroad.

Some 376 people were killed in Jimani alone after the rain-swollen Soleil River burst its banks early Monday.
