![]() SANTIAGO (AFP) Nov 17, 2005 A strong earthquake shook northern Chile and Bolivia, frightening residents and cutting utilities but without causing damage, Chilean officials reported Thursday. The quake hit Potosi, Bolivia at 1926 GMT, 110 kilometers (70 miles) east of the Chilean city of Calama and 245 kilometers (150 miles) east of Tocapilla, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake struck with a magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale some 105 kilometers (65 miles) below the surface, the Geological Survey said. The University of Chile's seismological service placed the magnitude at 6.8 on the Richter scale. Chilean officials of the National Office of Emergencies at the Ministry of Interior said despite the subterranean shaking, there was no damage. However, some telephone and electricity service was cut momentarily and hundreds of residents ran into the streets out of fear of a tsunami in the Pacific coastal city of Antofagasta, 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) north of Santiago. Residents of Calama, Tocapilla, Mejillones and Copiapo all felt the shock waves, the ministry said. All rights reserved. 2005 Agence France-Presse.
