France gives aid agencies special grant for Pakistan quake relief
ISLAMABAD (AFP) Nov 20, 2005
France announced Sunday 6.5 million eurosmillion dollars) in special grants for international aid agencies working in Pakistan's quake-ravaged north.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy made the announcement during a visit to a medical complex in the capital Islamabad where he met people injured in the October 8 quake and the doctors treating them.

The grants included 2.5 million euros for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and two million euros each for the International Committee of the Red Cross and the World Food Programme.

"I am aware of the enormous work that each one of you is doing on the ground during such emergency situations," the minister told the doctors. "Your activities in Pakistan since the 8th of October prove it once again."

More than 73,000 people were killed in Pakistan and thousands more injured when a 7.6-magnitude quake hit Pakistani Kashmir and parts of North West Frontier Province. Millions of people were made homeless and forced to live in the open.

The French minister also announced a donation of two million doses of vaccinations against tetanus and one million against measles.

France has already pledged a total of 124 million dollars for relief and reconstruction efforts for quake victims in Pakistan.

UNICEF representative in Pakistan, Omar A. Abdi, thanked the French minister for the assistance which he said would give impetus to a campaign to vaccinate four million children under the age of 15 against measles.
