Elephants kill 200 in Bangladesh in a decade: study
DHAKA (AFP) Dec 25, 2005
At least 200 people have been killed by elephants since 1996 due to human encroachment on the habitats of wild Asian pachyderms in densely populated Bangladesh, according to a survey released Sunday.

Of these, around 51 died in the northern hill areas of Mymensingh while most of the others were killed in the southeastern forest areas of the Chittagong hill tracts, state-run BSS news agency said, quoting the government survey.

According to the survey, there are about 800 elephants, including 350 wild ones, left in the country.

Bangladesh, with a population of 140 million, is the world's most densely populated country, with about 1,000 people per square kilometre.
