Avalanche kills off-piste skier in French Alps
GRENOBLE, France (AFP) Dec 31, 2005
A 25-year-old man was killed by an avalanche Saturday while skiing off piste in the French Alps, a mountain rescue official said.

The man was carried away by a 100-metre (yard) wide mass of snow above the Toussuire resort in the Savoy region.

"Fresh snow fell on old frozen snow and the new layer did not have time to stick, and this prompted the avalanche," senior mountain rescue official Guy Foulguier told AFP.

There was an avalanche risk of four, on a European scale that runs to five, meteorologists said..
