Icy winter cold claims eighth life in Germany
BERLIN, Jan 29 (AFP) Jan 29, 2006
An elderly man froze to death in eastern Germany at the weekend, police said, bringing to eight the death toll here in a cold spell gripping most of Europe.

The 55-year-old was found in the street in Poehl in the state of Saxony on Saturday suffering from hypothermia, and died in hospital two hours later.

The temperature dropped to minus 15 degrees Celsius (five degrees Fahrenheit) in parts of Saxony, which borders on the Czech Republic, overnight Saturday.

On Friday, a homeless man froze to death in Gelsenkirchen in western Germany.
