Equinor to extract Norway oil near 'current levels' till 2035
Oslo, Aug 26 (AFP) Aug 26, 2024
Norwegian energy giant Equinor intends to keep its oil and gas production in the country "around current levels" for another decade, its CEO said Monday, despite calls to transition away from fossil fuels.

Oil, gas and coal companies like Equinor are under pressure to move away from the polluting energy sources, which are the biggest contributor to climate change.

"Equinor aims to maintain oil and gas production from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) around current levels for at least another decade," chief executive Anders Opedal said at an energy conference in Oslo, quoted by the NTB agency.

The state-owned company produced the equivalent of around 1.37 million barrels of oil per day on the NCS last year and expects to maintain the same level this year.

It also invested $5.4 billion last year in exploration and production in Norway.

Equinor plans to hold Norwegian oil production at 1.2 million barrels per day until 2035 and expects to produce 40 billion cubic metres (52 billion cubic yards) of gas a year by 2035.

In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Norway has become Europe's biggest supplier of natural gas.

In May, Equinor and its partners agreed to invest 12 billion kroner ($1.1 billion) to further develop the Scandinavian country's Troll gas field in the North Sea, which supplies around 10 percent of Europe's gas needs.
