Intelsat Planning Next Phase
Washington DC - July 1, 1998 - Intelsat today announced that it is undertaking several initiatives to ensure a smooth operational transition of its satellite system into the next millennium. The main initiative, the Intelsat Year 2000 Program, includes both internal and external components. The internal component focuses on Intelsat owned spacecraft, control earth stations, and operational and administrative systems, while the external component focuses on assisting its partners and customers in the 200 countries where Intelsat operates to become Year 2000 compliant.

Internally, Intelsat has completed assessing Year 2000 issues and planning for their resolution. Currently, the organization is engaged in the remediation and testing of its critical and essential systems to assure Year 2000 compliance. Externally, Intelsat is sharing technical information to help its customers and partners around the world. As part of this focus, Intelsat is collaborating with the World Bank's Information for Development Program (InfoDev) by providing technical assistance on telecommunication issues. The InfoDev Year 2000 initiative provides awareness through seminars and assistance via grants for development issues. InfoDev's Program Manager, Carlos Braga, commented, "Our Year 2000 program is critical to us and we greatly appreciate Intelsat's assistance and technical support at our regional workshops around the world."

Other external initiatives which Intelsat has created include: a Year 2000 Web site, which shares Intelsat Year 2000 Program and technical information with customers and other users of the system; membership in the ITU Year 2000 Task Force, where Intelsat supports the Service Continuity Testing sub-group, focusing on end-to-end testing; and a Year 2000 seminar in coordination with the Intelsat Advantage Program, providing technical information and assistance to its member countries.

Ramu Potarazu, Intelsat's Vice President and Chief Information Officer, stated, "Our activities surrounding the Year 2000 issues are very closely related to Intelsat's original mission -- to provide advanced telecommunications services to all countries of the world. The Intelsat Year 2000 Program has been undertaken to share what we learn and assist all our partners around the world, and to ensure that our global system will continue to operate as we transition into the next century."
