Hard Energy Dialog: Lose In The West, Gain In The East Moscow (RIA Novosti) Oct 25, 2006
Russian state-owned oil company Rosneft and China's CNPC have signed a protocol to set up a joint venture, Vostok Energy, to develop and produce mineral resources in Eastern Siberia. China will finance the development stage in exchange for access to Russian deposits and stable deliveries of oil and petrochemicals. The venture's authorized capital will be $10 million. Rosneft will control 51% in the company, and CNPC will hold the remaining 49%. CNPC became Rosneft's official partner in March 2006, when the two companies signed a memorandum to establish a venture. Among other things, the new company will conduct geological and exploration work in Russia, develop mineral deposits and obtain licenses for the use of mineral resources. |

London (AFP) Oct 24, 2006Global warming is exacerbating disputes over access to water and food resources, and could lead to more failed states, British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett warned in an interview published in the Financial Times on Tuesday. "There are nations in a very delicate condition and (global warming) will tip some of them over into being failed states," Beckett told the newspaper in Berlin. Soot From Wood Stoves Impacts Global Warming More Than Expected
Washington DC (SPX) Oct 25, 2006New measurements of soot produced by traditional cook stoves used in developing countries suggest that these stoves emit more harmful smoke particles and could have a much greater impact on global climate change than previously thought, according to a study scheduled to appear in the Nov. 1 issue of the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science and Technology. It Took More than One Punch To KO the Dinos
Boulder CO (SPX) Oct 25, 2006There's growing evidence that the dinosaurs and most their contemporaries were not wiped out by the famed Chicxulub meteor impact, according to a paleontologist who says multiple meteor impacts, massive volcanism in India, and climate changes culminated in the end of the Cretaceous Period. Trotting With Emus To Walk With Dinosaurs
Laramie WY (SPX) Oct 25, 2006One way to make sense of 165-million-year-old dino tracks may be to hang out with emus, say paleontologists studying thousands of dinosaur footprints at the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite in northern Wyoming. Because they are about the same size, walk on two legs and have similar feet, emus turn out to be the best modern version of the enigmatic reptiles that once trotted along a long-lost coastline in the Middle Jurassic. Amazon River Reversed Flow
Chapel Hill NC (SPX) Oct 25, 2006Ask any South American dinosaur which way the Amazon River flows and she would have told you east-to-west, the opposite of today. That's the surprising conclusion of researchers studying ancient mineral grains buried in the Amazon Basin. The once westward roll of what is now the world's largest river was caused by a long-gone highland near what today is the river's mouth. |
