A new study using long-term satellite data has documented a climate-driven shift in Antarctic phytoplankton communities, with potential effects on the marine food chain and the Southern Ocean's carbon storage capacity. Published in Nature Climate Change, the research analysed ESA's Climate Change Initiative records of sea surface temperature, ocean colour and sea ice extent, combined with pigment data from over 14,000 in-situ samples collected between 1997 and 2023.
