by Staff Writers
Bukavu, Dr Congo (AFP) Jan 20, 2014

Eleven people have been killed in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said on Monday.

Five of them died when a hillside house collapsed onto another dwelling on Saturday night in the town of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.

Six other people lost their lives when their house was swallowed up by a ravine, municipal spokesman Jean-Serge Bora Uzima told AFP.

In both cases, the homes were built on land deemed unsuitable for construction.
