Nine people were killed and at least 10 others injured in a gas pipeline blast in southwest China's Sichuan province, state media said.

A source with the provincial administration of work safety said the blast occurred at 12:10 am (0410 GMT) in the county of Renshou, according to Xinhua news agency.

The source said the pipeline belongs to the China National Petroleum Corporation's southwestern oil and gas field branch, Xinhua reported.

No further details were immediately available but an investigation was under way.
