The U.S. Army has contracted AeroVironment for the supply of Block 10C Switchblade Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile Systems.

The order from the Army Close Combat Weapons Systems Project Office is worth more than $2.7 million and includes support services.

The Switchblade system is a rapid launch, high-precision, force protection loitering missile. Initially designed for dismounted infantry operations, it comes in multiple variants. It is an expendable unmanned aerial vehicle with explosives that crashes into its target.

"Switchblade is a mature system, in production, that delivers unmatched force protection and precision strike capabilities to American forces," said Kirk Flittie, AeroVironment vice president and general manager of its Unmanned Aircraft Systems business segment. "Soldier-portable and lightweight, Switchblade is a uniquely powerful LMAMS [Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile Systems] solution for complex combat environments.

"AeroVironment stands ready, with a proven product, supply chain and production system, to respond rapidly to this and future requirements."

AeroVironment said it expects deliveries of the system to occur within the next 12 months.
