Algiers (AFP) Sept 10, 2024

Algerian civil defence officials have put the death toll of victims in recent flooding in the south at six, local media reported on Tuesday.

Reports said the bodies of four people, aged between 10 and 59, were recovered in Tamanrasset, Naama and Bechar provinces.

This added to an initial death toll of two people since Friday following heavy rainfall and massive flooding in several areas of southern Algeria.

Authorities said several trapped families had also been rescued.

The areas affected by the flooding in southern Algeria, and in Morocco where authorities said at least 18 people died, are usually arid.
