EU debates common energy strategy

Prague (AFP) Nov 5, 2007
European representatives gathered Monday in Prague to discuss if a "nuclear energy renaissance" was feasible to cut the European Union's dependence on imported energy.

"This discussion is necessary to confront our shortfall," Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said, calling on France, Finland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Italy and the Baltic countries to support a "nuclear energy renaissance."

The participants gathered at the European Energy Forum will discuss a common energy platform and outline a plan on objectives for 2020 as well as commercial cooperation with Russia.

"It is all a question of knowing if European countries truly want to cooperate," French foreign ministry representative Patrice Allard said.

Discussions on a common energy stance are being opposed by several groups in France, Germany and Italy," said Fraser Cameron, director of the EU-Russia Centre in Brussels.

"Mutual accusations among certain European countries are poisoning the atmosphere," he said.

The conference is due to end Tuesday after some 30 energy experts from various countries and representatives of national energy companies debate a slew of issues.

Analysis: A 'super grid' for Europe
Berlin (UPI) Nov 2, 2007
Europe's electricity grids are old and often not capable of providing trans-border, much less trans-continent energy security. Yet one German energy expert has come up with a visionary scenario that would overhaul the grids, increase energy security and at the same time help avoid climate change.
