Bethesda MD (SPX) Sep 17, 2004 Stratos Global Corp. has launched its next-generation StratosOne service, an industry-leading, all-in-one messaging solution that provides a low-cost, efficient and reliable platform for satellite-based maritime messaging and communications. With StratosOne, maritime users now have access to a unified software solution that provides a single system to support all of their messaging needs, including e-mail, fax, telex and SMS messaging. StratosOne features an easy-to-use Windows-based interface, advanced SPAM filters and virus protection, and supports file attachments. The service also supports multiple e-mail addresses for maritime crews, with on-board billing, and provides optional access to up-to-date weather, news and sports information. A key benefit of StratosOne is a significant improvement in onboard data handling efficiency, which leads to a reduction in the cost and amount of time required to send ship-to-shore communications. Advanced file compression technology reduces the amount of data that is sent, and simultaneous two-way data transfer makes more efficient use of satellite time. By improving efficiency, and reducing communications tasks and time, StratosOne frees captains and officers to spend more time on their primary responsibilities. "Our first transmission using StratosOne included a large number of messages, which were successfully sent in about one-quarter the amount of time it would have taken with our previous solution," said Captain Karun Chhabra, master of the M/V Dole Chile. "The time savings, combined with the cost savings, makes StratosOne an ideal solution. The StratosOne installation went smoothly and we're very pleased with the software and service from Stratos." "StratosOne is the premier all-in-one solution for satellite-based maritime data communications on the market today," said Jim Parm, Stratos' president and chief executive officer. "The advanced features of StratosOne, backed by Stratos' proven reputation for reliable service and responsive, around-the-clock support, make StratosOne the clear choice for vessels like the M/V Dole Chile, which require cost-effective messaging and data communications at sea." The M/V Dole Chile, one of the two largest refrigerated container ships in the world, is part of a fleet of Dole vessels that carry fresh produce from tropical regions to North America, Europe and Japan. Its sister-vessel, the M/V Dole Columbia, is also being outfitted with StratosOne. Both vessels are using StratosOne with Inmarsat-B satellite technology. StratosOne also supports most other Inmarsat satellite platforms, including Inmarsat-A/-B/-M/mini-M/Regional BGAN/GAN and Fleet, as well as Iridium, Marinesat/Landsat and VSAT systems, such as StratosITek.
