The Mountain Rain or Snow project engaged 1,684 volunteers this winter to track precipitation, an increase of about a third from last season. These participants submitted over 32,110 observations, exceeding last year's total by more than 10,000.

Some volunteers stood out with significant contributions. Patrick Thorson submitted 676 observations. Nayoung Hur recorded data across the largest elevational range, and Lauren H. reported from the highest peak at 11,993 feet.

"Congratulations to Patrick Thorson, Chris Gotschalk, SV, Karen O, Marley Jennings, Mariah Blackhorse, Robert R., Randall Bursk, Bill Locke, Erin Grogan, Lauren H., Craig Hall, and Nayoung Hur for their remarkable contributions," the project team stated.

"Thank you to all Mountain Rain or Snow observers for keeping your eyes on the sky with us this winter!"

The project continues to seek more data to enhance weather and water source forecasting. U.S. residents near mountainous areas can join by visiting www.rainorsnow.org/signup on their phones and selecting their region.

However, the last time similar heavy amounts of daily snowfall were recorded in Helsinki on April 23 dates back to 1972 - more than 50 ... read more
