Born to be wired: Why we love the IT revolutionaries
Paris (AFP) Oct 6, 2009
Remember what it was like, a dozen years or so ago, when you tried to communicate with someone on the other side of the world? The truncated conversations down crackly copper wires? The chore of sending papers or pictures by post -- by "snail mail"? The insane costs of long-distance contact of almost any kind? It's no surprise why we have embraced digital technology with such passion ... read more

Global economic crisis to slash carbon emissions: IEA
Bangkok (AFP) Oct 7, 2009
The global economic crisis will slash carbon emissions in 2009, opening a narrow opportunity to take decisive action on global warming, the International Energy Agency said Tuesday. The predicted three percent fall in energy-related CO2 pollution compared with a year earlier would be the steepest drop in 40 years, chief IEA economist Fatih Birol said at a press conference in Bangkok. ... more

Bangkok (UPI) Oct 6, 2009
The World Wildlife Fund called for Asia's first regional climate change adaptation agreement in the Greater Mekong region. The area -- which comprises Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and southwest provinces of China -- is already strongly affected by climate change, and a lack of immediate action will come at great cost to the Mekong nations, states a WWF report released ... more

Guinea junta chief must step down before talks: opposition
Conakry (AFP) Oct 6, 2009
Guinea's opposition said Tuesday it would only hold talks with the junta after its leader Moussa Dadis Camara steps down and those responsible for a massacre of protesters are arrested. Burkina Faso president Blaise Compaore, the regional mediator in the conflict, on Monday invited the junta and the opposition parties for talks in Ouagadougou to ease the tension in the west African country. ... more

Dancing around legislative language
Washington (UPI) Oct 6, 2009
Some say it's a "tax," while others say it's a "penalty." U.S. President Barack Obama, during a blustery exchange with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, insisted it is a "responsibility." And U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe has proposed calling it a "defined minimum contribution." The cause of all the verbal volleyball on Capitol Hill is one section of the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare bill ... more

In corruption-plagued Indonesia, few hope for quake relief
Bunga Pasang, Indonesia (AFP) Oct 6, 2009
Indonesian housewife Edib Mulyati stands in the ruins of her quake-hit house and smiles bitterly at the government's promises of aid, saying most of it will be lost to corruption. Married to a low-ranking civil servant, she knows how the system works and expects nothing more than a trickle of funds to reach those most in need after the money passes through the various levels of government. ... more
