A motorist was found dead after being swept away by floodwaters on Guadeloupe on Friday, the authorities said, as a tropical storm swept over the French overseas territory in the Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Jerry, which also skirted the coasts of the nearby islands of Martinique, St Barthelemy and Saint-Martin, is now moving towards the North Atlantic Ocean.

Overnight Thursday to Friday, between 100 and 180 millimetres (3.9- 7.1 inches) were recorded on Grande-Terre, the eastern part of Guadeloupe, according to French weather agency Meteo France.

The local authorities said the motorist was found in his car in a district in the capital after he had previously raised the alarm and said he could not swim.

The storm caused disruption on the roads and left hundreds of customers without power. Schools were shut and public transport and boat connections between islands were cancelled, they added.

Weather warnings have now been downgraded to "heavy rain and thunderstorms".
